SEARCH ENGINES ADOBE PDF ONLINE SEARCH Search through more than a million summaries of Adobe® Portable Document Format (PDF) files on the Web. DIRECT SEARCH Direct search is a growing compilation of links to the search interfaces of resources that contain data not easily or entirely searchable/accessible from general search tools like Alta Vista, Google, or Hotbot. Although these "general" tools are essential for the retrieval of Internet based data, searchers often fail to realize that a massive amount of information is not easily or entirely searchable/accessible via these search tools. Material "hidden" from the general search tools is said to reside on the Invisible Web. GLOBAL FEDERATED SEARCH Here's a search engine that gives you some interesting options. Global Federated Search is a meta-search engine, which means it allows you to search in multiple places at once. What's neat about Global Federated Search is that you can specify if you want it to search: the top ten search engines; image collections; theses and dissertations; libraries on the Web; law/legal sites; and other categories. If none of the predefined categories works for you, there's also something called Site Metadata Search, which lets you search the whole GFR catalog to find sites that might have your information. Each section has a What's New area, which shows sites added recently, and there's also a list of recommended search engines and finding tools if you can't locate what you need at the InfoMine site. InfoMine has thousands of resources in its database, and it is constantly being updated. Academics and researchers all over the country contribute useful Internet addresses to InfoMine, and each submission is reviewed and catalogued by the InfoMine staff. [From Really Useful Sites #172 27 Oct 2000.] INVISIBLE WEB: HIDDEN SEARCHABLE SITES Vast expanses of the Web are completely invisible to general purpose search engines like AltaVista, HotBot and Google: find the hidden gems search engines can't see. KARNAK Do research while you're sleeping. At Karnak you construct a search query, then go about your life. In the meantime, Karnak is gathering information from the Internet and adding it to your "personal library".Karnak...notifies you by e-mail when it finds new or changed information for your query....helps you to construct a more accurate search query, then scours the Web at a deeper level than other search engines to find what you're looking for (and eliminates dead or stale links from your results). Karnak has several pricing plans available, but there is also a free membership option. [From Really Useful Sites #171 20 Oct 2000] LEXIBOT Lexibot says it searches the "Deep Web", which is the part of the Web that isn't covered by conventional search engines. These databases and other repositories of information may be useful to you, and Lexibot claims to include them in its search, scanning hundreds of databases and search engines at the same time. Lexibot has a lot of features that allow you more control over your search, and it has a free version that you can download and try out. If you choose to use the fee-based version, it's $89. [From Really Useful Sites #173 03 Nov 2000] Northern Lights Internet Solutions Ltd. [MD] [From SCOUT REPORT 20000630] SEARCHPOWER: WORLD'S LARGEST SEARCH DIRECTORY Provides access to reference sites broken down by category, such as MEDICAL. SimpliFind SimpliFind cuts through...potential confusion by first trying to establish the real concept of your query before it begins the search. For instance, a query for "drive" produces ten concepts, including device, computer drive, road, journey, and golf stroke, among others, allowing users searching for golf tips to receive more relevant returns than those interested in hard drives. If none of the concepts match the query you have in mind, you can enter your own to generate more precise returns. After free registration, users can even customize SimpliFind, as it will store all their new concepts and search queries for future use. [MD] [From SCOUT REPORT 20000707.] SUBJEX: HAVE A DIALOGUE WITH YOUR SEARCH ENGINE Type a sentence in your own words about what you're looking for, and you then start a dialogue that helps you get an exact match. For each search query, Subjex returns a list of hits, just like a regular search engine, but it asks you questions about those hits, to help you target your search more narrowly.Continue this dialogue with Subjex for as long as you like, and you'll get more accurate results the longer you do.
